Due to our extensive experience building custom search engine friendly websites, and an ever-growing consumer demand for ecommerce website design, I find myself explaining The Long Tail concept a lot. Whenever I repeat the same advice 3 times in one week, it’s time for a blog post so, here we go.

This very simple concept was first coined by Chris Anderson in an article written for Wired Magazine in 2004.

As desribed on Wikipedia, The Long Tail means that the distribution and inventory costs of businesses allow them to realize significant profit out of selling small volumes of hard-to-find items to many customers, instead of only selling large volumes of a reduced number of popular items. The group of persons that buy the hard-to-find or “non-hit” items is the customer demographic called the Long Tail.

the Long Tail

What does this mean?
Understanding The Long Tail will help you form a solid search engine strategy for your website. This holds especially true for clients who wish to write their own website text or copy. Our Marketing Director does an excellent job at determining valuable keywords and stringing them together to form Long Tail terms.

A properly developed Long Tail campaign can mean huge rewards for website owners who take advantage of the fact that getting 1000 visits from the search engines for the term “web design” is not as important as getting 50 visits from the search engines from people looking for “custom website design”.

Whats the difference?
People who search for “web design” might be looking for a quick and dirty $500 website, a webmaster looking for advice or someone wanting a template design.

Alternatively, when someone types “custom website design” in to Google, we know they are looking for a custom website. This is our target customer, we are not a budget website design shop or, as my boss likes to say, “We are not a puppy mill”.

We seek relationships with customers who understand the benefits of a custom website design and custom Search Engine Marketing campaign. You can expand this Long Tail Term even further by saying “Delaware Custom website Design“. This is a perfect Long Tail example and it works great!

Identifying your perfect Long Tail Terms means targeting your ideal customer and identifying how the ideal customer or lead will find you using the search engines. Using this practice, you are almost sure to increase your conversion rate and decrease your bounce rate.

I hope this article helps you and your company become more successful online!
